昨年のデルタ航空に続き、独ルフトハンザ航空とオーストリア航空がSurfaceを採用
航空業界でSurface Pro 3の採用が加速してきました。
公式Surface Blogは、11月19日、大手航空会社のルフトハンザ航空及びオーストリア航空がSurface Pro 3を採用することを発表しました。

昨年、米国デルタ航空がSurface 2を導入するというニュースがありましたが、これに続く採用事例となります。
今回の記事では、上記の発表文から、なぜ航空業界でSurfaceの採用が進んでいるのか、その背景を読み取ってみたいと思います。
Surfaceの業務利用のハードルを段階的にクリア
Microsoftでは、Surfaceの業務利用の障害を除くために着実に取り組みを進めてきています。
航空業界については、去る9月、米国連邦航空局(FAA)及び欧州航空安全機関(ESAA)により、電子フライトバッグ（EFB）としてSurface Pro 3を使用することが認定されたことが発表されました。
Surface Pro 3本体だけでなく、航空機に設置するための「navAero」、ソフトウェアの「Jeppesen FliteDeck Pro」と組み合わせたソリューションになっているようです。

今回の導入は、こうした認可と周辺機器・ソフトウェアを含めたソリューションが整っていることが追い風となったようです。
オーストリア航空の場合
オーストリア航空では、まず650台、年末までに1000台のSurface Pro 3を導入。オーストリア航空当局の認可が得られ次第、完全なペーパーレスへの移行を計画しているとのこと。
Austrian Airlines has already begun rolling out Surface Pro 3s for use as electronic flight bags (EFBs) to their pilots. With 650 already deployed, they expect to deploy up to nearly 1,000 Surface Pro 3s by the end of the year. Additionally, one A320 Aircraft has already been equipped with both Surface Pro 3 devices and navAero connected mounts for a 3 month EFB-operation with paper backup. Once complete and upon approval from the Austrian Civil Aviation Authority, Austrian Airlines will move forward with a completely paperless operation. Austrian plans to equip the whole fleet of about 80 aircraft with mounts to eliminate the paper on board of all their aircraft.
“Starting in the late 1990s with the arrival of the first laptops in the flight deck, the dream of a completely paperless cockpit is now actually becoming a reality thanks to the Surface tablets from Microsoft,” explains Dr. Philipp Haller, B777-Pilot at Austrian Airlines. As Electronic Flight Bag Administrator, Philipp Haller is also leading the current EFB-project and states, “The high performance, the large screen, and the – in comparison – very low weight make the Surface Pro 3 an ideal work instrument for the flight crews. We have been using laptops for 15 years to replace most of the paper on board but they could not be used during takeoff and landing. Thanks to the Surface tablet-based electronic flight bags mounted in the cockpit, that is now possible!”
ルフトハンザ航空の場合
一方、ドイツのルフトハンザ航空は、パイロット向けに5000台超のSurface Pro 3を購入し、コックピット及び地上業務の生産性を高めるとのこと。
来春までに全地域のパイロットにデバイスを行き渡らせる計画のようです。
Deutsche Lufthansa AG has purchased more than 5,000 Surface Pro 3 devices for pilots, helping to improve productivity for pilots in the cockpit and on the ground. Device rollout to pilots worldwide will take place in February and the airline projects will reach completion to pilots in all regions where Lufthansa flies by next spring.
結論：電子フライトバッグのデファクトスタンダードになるか？
今回発表された事例は、業務用デバイスとして培ってきたトータルの強みが生かされたものといえるでしょう。
導入を発表した2社は世界の代表的航空会社ですが、今後、日本も含めた世界中でSurfaceはデファクトスタンダードになっていくのか、要注目ですね。
