Windowsの未来の姿は、Surface＆Windows RT。それはなぜ？

先週は、「Surface＆Windows RTが、将来のWindowsのメインストリームになる」という論考が米国のメディアに相次いで掲載されました。

Surfaceシリーズの将来に大きく関係する「DaaS」の重要性について指摘されていたので、記事としてまとめておきたいと思います。

１つが、ZDnetが掲載した、Rot Trent氏の記事。

「Windows RTがWindowsの未来である」理由はクラウド化

初代Surface RTが多方面から批判され、市場で在庫が積みあがった最大の原因は、「Windowsデスクトップアプリ」が動かない点にあります。

しかし、Rot Trent氏は、「クラウド化の進行」がこの弱点を解消し、デスクトップ環境がクラウド上で動作する時代の到来を予想しています。

Windows 9世代では、ユーザーが直接使うデバイスにはWindows RT的なOSが載るというラディカルな見解です！

Microsoft's work on Windows 9 is ongoing and will continue to follow the company's strategy – a strategy that is all Cloud. As the availability of Windows store-provided apps increases, and legacy vendors rework their apps to run on touchscreens, there will be less and less need for legacy applications. For those legacy apps that are slow to catch up, and as VDI becomes a more prominent Cloud service, an RT-like OS can simply run the old apps from the Cloud.

There are those that have said Microsoft will abandon Windows RT completely, but I don't believe that's the case. I believe it will only be extended, enhanced, and improved and eventually come to be known as: Windows 9.

I tend to love what Microsoft offers first party with RDS (Remote Desktop Services), especially in the Server 2012 R2 release. It's super secure, rock solid in performance, and cuts down endpoint device costs considerably.

Windows Azure hinted at making this a full fledged reality last year when Microsoft allowed SPLA-licensed hosting companies to offer RDS in their IaaS cloud, but this is still somewhat anti-consumer still since SPLA licensing is not easily acquired or maintained by smaller firms that want to control their own RDS setup on Azure.

What the heck does DaaS have to do with Windows RT? Quite a lot, actually. As I mentioned, Windows Server is likely to continue down an x86 path for the foreseeable future so Microsoft's RDS functionality can continue offering up the "legacy" Windows experience for clients.

Microsoftは、Windows Azure上で動作するWindows Sever 2012 R2 （Windows 8.1のサーバー版）へのリモート接続によって、Surfaceのようなデバイスからデスクトップアプリを動かすことを可能にしているというのです。

これをDaaS=Destop as a Serviceと呼んでいる、というのを素人の私は初めて知りましたが、クラウド業界では常識のようです。

ユーザーの手元には、バッテリーで長時間動作し安全なモバイルデバイスとOS（SurfaceとWindows RT）が残り、従来のWindows OSが提供してきた機能の多くはクラウド上に移る。

これらの海外記事を読んで、「なるほど。そうか～」と思っていたところ、ちょうど日本でもWindows Azure上のDaaSサービスが提供されるとのニュースが流れてきました。

ビットアイルは2014年3月7日、Windows 8.1のデスクトップ環境を、クラウドを介してDaaS（デスクトップアズアサービス）型で提供するサービス「ビットアイルデスクトップサービス on Azure」（写真）を発表した。Windows Azure上で動作しているWindows Server 2012 R2を、RDS（リモートデスクトップサービス）を用いて、複数のユーザーで共有する使い方となる。
